Messe München (New Munich Trade Fair Exhibition Centre)
For decades, the Theresienhöhe was the venue for Munich trade fairs and exhibitions. Because the events became larger and no further expansion was possible, a new location was sought. The former airport site in Riem, which had only been vacated and allocated for redevelopment a few years earlier, was ideal. In 1998 the Messe moved to the east of Munich. Two additional exhibition halls were added to the 16 exhibition halls built at the time in 2018. Each of the 18 halls have a total of 200,000 square metres of exhibition space. The multi-use open space in front of the halls is twice as large. This means that Messe München is larger than Hellabrunn Zoo, and the Allianz Arena would fit into the exhibition centre16 times. There are two main entrances to Munich's modern exhibition centre. Between them lies a 650 metre long atrium building, from which twelve of the exhibition halls can be accessed. The 86 metre high exhibition tower rises up at the east entrance. Messe München bore the costs for this major project itself. Its shareholders include the Free State of Bavaria and the City of Munich.
