Willy-Brandt-Platz
The area in front of the Riem Arcaden - also the entrance to the Messestadt Riem - is an area twice as large as Munich's Marienplatz. It is bordered on three sides by the shopping centre and a hotel. Its open north flank is spanned by a 150 metre long and 22 metre high portico on fine metal columns. The Willy-Brandt-Platz evokes an enclosed impression despite its considerable size. Residents were originally given a broad mandate in contributing to the original design of the space by dispensing with design elements. Nevertheless, more and more voices stated that the square lacked vitality and relevance to the people. With intensive public involvement, a project is now exploring ways to improve the popularity of Willy-Brandt-Platz.
