Olympiadorf
Olympiadorf is home to 6,000 people today. During the Olympic Games in 1972 the male athletes were hosted in this area which was designed to be a residential area after the games. It was planned by architects Heinle, Wischer and partners as an experiment of urban design conceived as a city within a city. Its center is the local business area which provides all the goods and functions for everyday needs. Acknowledging the Zeitgeist of the 1970ies the terrace-shaped buildings orientate themselves towards the sun. Streets for motorised traffic are simulated underground, seperating them from pedestrian and bicycle traffic on the car-free ground surface above.
