Sgraffito, Hackenstrasse 1
In 1958 the new residential and commercial building designed by architect Fritz Zieseniss was completed. In order to blend the new construction into the surrounding buildings, the planner partitioned the façade, adding small decorative balconies. The balconies were designed by the painter Walter Schulz-Matan (1889 to 1965) with sgrafittos bearing symbolic images that stand against a dark or light background, depending on the level. The client Max Eichele, the architect and the artist were immortalized on one parapet each. The artist’s parapet includes a hand holding a Schulz-Matans business card, as well as sheets of paper and a pen.
