At the corner of Tal and Maderbräustrasse there is an unusual representation of the Münchner Kindl or Munich Monk on the Stadtsparkasse building. At the end of the 1950s, the Munich-based blacksmith Herbert Altmann created a sculpture assembled from several sheets of bronze sheet metal, standing on a tapered base with gilded elements. Because of the facial expression, long hands and thin fingers, Altmann’s ‘Münchner Kindl’ has an idiosyncratic, ghostly expression. Munich locals at that time therefore named the Monk Zinsgespenst a reference to the character’s slightly sinister, spectral appearance.
