Ostpark
The planning and construction of Ostpark are inextricably linked to the development of the Neuperlach district. Ostpark boasts 56 hectares of green space, and is now a recreational area for the whole of east Munich. Its design was strongly influenced by the 1960s. At that time, planned parks with decorative greenery were less desirable, residents preferred a variety of usable spaces. Grassed areas in which to lie, play and exercise were the priorities and promoted the ‘takeover of the turf’. The 1970s brought a growing awareness of ecological sustainability, which influenced the design of the Ostpark. The beer garden, the playgrounds, the spacious lawns, the sledding hill and the open-air theatre offer a variety of potential uses. Creative design techniques were and are used deliberately: A large green valley with a lake is bordered by hills, the flanks of which are covered by forest. A large part of the parkland has no prescribed use, allowing individual appropriation.
